Description	This study examines the role of the German school system in Czechoslovakia between the First and Second World War. Could it have been possible for the schools to be a instrument for integration while at the same time respond to the postulation of an own identity of the German population? Scientific research into the education at secondary schools in this multinational state has been neglected so far, although the topic shows vital importance. This study tries to reconstruct the proceedings of the Czechoslovakian school boards and the reactions of the German speaking teachers with an emphasis on everyday school life. For the first time, annual school reports, schoolbooks, publications of pedagogues and teacher associations as well as personal memoires are evaluated systematically. Festivities at German schools and the structure of teacher`s organizations are analyzed, former teachers and numerous pupils are interviewed. Starting from a large number of sources, this study fathoms the chances and obsta (en) Diese Studie fragt nach der Rolle des deutschen Schulwesens in der Tschechoslowakei der Zwischenkriegszeit. Hätte es gelingen können, die Schule als Instrument staatlicher Integration einzusetzen und zugleich auf die Forderung der deutschen Bevölkerung nach einer eigenen Identität einzugehen? Obwohl die Ausbildung auf den höheren allgemeinbildenden Schulen im Kontext eines multinationalen Staates zweifellos von großer nationaler und politischer Brisanz war, ist ihre wissenschaftliche Erforschung bisher weitgehend vernachlässigt worden. Die Untersuchung rekonstruiert das Vorgehen der tschechoslowakischen Schulbehörden und die Reaktionsmuster deutschsprachiger Lehrer. Der Schulalltag rückt ins Zentrum. Zum ersten Mal werden Schuljahresberichte, Lehrbücher, Veröffentlichungen von Pädagogen und Lehrervereinen ebenso wie Memoiren systematisch ausgewertet.
