Description
| - Interdisciplinary workshop during which a group of scholars and students discussed possibilities of interconnecting various branches of humanities and different kinds of historical sources in research of one particular topic related to archaeology of Germanic peoples of the Migration Period and Early Middle Ages. The topic was related to archaeological finds of imported glass and ceramic vessels at Germanic burial sites from the Migration Period in the Czech Republic and other regions of Europe. Jiří Vávra (Labrys, o.p.s., Prague) informed about the excavation and finds of ceramic and glass vessels in Prague-Zličín. The lecture of Jaroslav Jiřík (Labrys, o.p.s.; Dept. of Prehistory and Early History of Charles University in Prague) showed the spread of glass vessels in the Roman Empire and Barbaricum in the late antiquity, concerning also questions of technology, typology, social context and critique of distribution maps. The talk of Anne Hofmann (Institut für nordische und germanische Altertumskunde, Munich) about old-Norse drinking horns and its usage combined evidence of material culture and literary sources. Interpretative lecture of Stanislav Doležal (University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice) intermediated the outer view of drinking among Germanic population in Barbaricum as reflected by Latin and Greek literary sources and their authors. The inner view as reflected in the Germanic sources was shown in talks about cultic aspects of drinking by Wilhelm Heizmann (Institut für nordische und germanische Altertumskunde, Munich), relationship between drinking and mythology by Jiří Starý (Department of Germanic Studies, Charles University in Prague), everyday dining and drinking and their social aspects by Eva Kraus (Institut für nordische und germanische Altertumskunde, Munich), and social functions of drinking rituals and accompanying activities by Helena Znojemská (Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures, Charles University in Prague).
