Description
  • Minor grass species are commonly found in different types of habitats across all temperate zones throughout the world. They have been bred for special purposes such as: food and forage (e.g. brome grasses, meadow foxtail, reed canarygrass, and tall and yellow oat grass), turf industry (bent grasses, crested dog’s tail, tufted hairgrass and prairie Junegrass), soil protection and erosion control (smooth brome grass) or even problems with high salinity soils (alkali grass). Although they currently receive much less attention than major grass species, it should be strongly emphasized that diversity of natural grassland areas is the key to solve many problems with soil, water and air quality. The chapter introduces readers into the wide range of grass species diversity and its possible functions.
