| - The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of initial structure modification and increased temperature on ultrafine grain structure formation of commercial low carbon steel AISI 1014. Two different initial structural states of the steel were prepared using thermal and thermomechanical treatment. The purpose of thermomechanical treatment was to refine the initial grain size in steel. The ultrafine grain structure was prepared by applying method severe plastic deformation ECAP with different level of straining at increased temperature. The impact of different effective strain εef introduced upon microstructure changes was investigated using light, scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The microhardness results (HV) along the deformed supported the microstructure development. Repeating deformation procedure (Bc) the coarse and modified (by TM) ferrite grains were refined and resulting structure was the mixture of fine grains having high angle boundaries. These changes in structure refinement appeared in structure when exposed to effective strain εef - 3 and 4. The observed heterogeneity in ultrafine grain structure formation, regardless the initial steel structure, supported the conclusion that applied effective strain was insufficient yet. The tensile tests results confirmed strength increase for both initial structural states of the steel; however the restricted ductility resulted.
