Description
  • Within this paper, short descriptions and basic characteristics of seven apple tree cultivars that have been introduced into practical fruit growing in the Czech Republic are presented. The novelty named Meteor cv., which originated from the mutual crossing of ´Megumi´ and ´Melrose´, is probably the most important of this group. It is distinguished by the longest fruit storability and excellent total fruit quality. Also its fruit appearance is very attractive. The trees of the cultivar, however, need a higher standard of grower attention and require high - quality chemical protection. The next four novelties – Flordika, Fragrance, Frosta and Vysočina, are resistant to scab and, therefore, are preferably suitable for producers involved in ecological apple production and should be also welcomed by hobby growers. The most important for this use seems to be the cultivar Frosta; aside from its scab resistance, it is also tolerant to other diseases and against frost injuries. The cultivar Vysočina was selected for growing in less favourable site localities and for higher altitudes. The remaining two novelties – Rubinstep and Rucla are distinguished by high quality fruits, both in respect to their appearance and taste. In addition, these fruits are well storable and possess a long shelf life. Both cultivars are planted into orchards of growers upholding standard grower practices. Their requirements for orchard growing procedures are on level with currently grown cultivars such as Gala or Jonagold.
