Description
  • From 25 old apple cultivars that were ranked as partly scab resistant upon a long term evaluation of spontaneous scab incidence in a wide collection (418 cultivars) in the early seventies at Holovousy, only 14 remained in the category, according to the recent monitoring of the their characteristics. In six cultivars, the resistance was changed to medium susceptibility and in other five items, the level of the resistance was significantly lowered. The highest resistance was confirmed in Hagloe Crab, followed by Mio, Early Victoria, Chelmsford Wonder, Hajkova muskatova, and Spatbliihender Taffetapfel. All these cultivars are recommended to be used as donors in further breeding crosses. Regarding commercially grown cultivars, the most remarkable change was observed in the case of Melrose, Jonagold, and Rubin, which were classified before as only slightly susceptible, but being at present ranged as susceptible or even very susceptible to the disease. All cultivars carrying the Vf factor remained fully resistant to scab on the territory of the Czech Republic until 2006, when a serious outbreak of their infestation due to new scab races was for the first time observed in some areas.
