Description
  • Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) belongs to very old cultivated plants. Czech hops represent the tradition of the excellent quality. The dominant hop variety, Saazer is still the best fine aroma hops. Saazer has its origin in the selection within indigenous wild hops from Saaz region. Local beer brewing was the base for the selection of the best Saazer clones. Those clones were gradually planted within the first hop gardens and they have developed into the regional hop varieties. From positive selection carried out by dr. Karel Osvald the first Czech hop varieties of fine aroma hops were released. Crossing as a method of hop breeding has been used since the middle of the 20th century. Thanks to this work ten following hybrid varieties have been registered since 1994: new aroma varieties (Sládek, Harmonie, Bohemia, Saaz Late), dual purpose varieties: Bor, Premiant, Rubín, Agnus and Vital. Kazbek is the first Czech variety with a specific aroma. All these varieties show very good brewing characteristics. Saazer is the standard of the best hop quality, therefore the legal designation for Saazer “Žatecký chmel” within European Union has been used since 2007.
