| Description
| - We report West Nile virus infection of the central nervous system in a 69-year-old man, residing in North Moravia, who visited the USA from 6 July to 31 August 2002. He developed fever with fatigue at the end of his US stay, and was hospitalized in Ostrava after his return on 3 September with fever (up to 39.5 °C), fatigue, anorexia, moderate laryngotracheitis, dizziness, insomnia, blurred speech, and a marked bradypsychism. EEG demonstrated a slow bifrontal theta- delta activity, and CT of the brain a slight hydrocefalus. A signigficant increase of antibodies neutralizing West Nile virus detected between the first (1:16) and second (1:256) blood serum sample. The patient recovered gradually and was released from hospitál on 16 September. This is the first recorded human case of West Nile fever imported to the Czech Republic.

- Uvádíme kazuistiku 69letého pacienta ze severní Moravy, který se infikoval virem West Nile fever za pobytu v USA od 6. července do 31. srpna 2002. Již koncem pobytu v USA měl horečku a únavu. Po návratu byl hospitalizován v Ostravě od 3. září pro teploty do 39.5 °C, nechutenství, laryngotracheitidu, nespavost, dysartrii a projevy bradypsychizmu. EEG prokázalo bifrontálně theta- delta aktivitu, CT mozku mírný hydrocefalus. Signifikantní vzestup neutralizačních protilátek proti West Nile viru z 1:16 na 1:256 byl průkazem, že se jedná o infekci virem West Nile fever. Stav pacienta se postupně zlepšoval a byl propuštěný z hospitalizace 16. září. Jedná se o první diagnostikovaný případ lidské nákazy virem West Nile importovaný do České republiky. (cs)
