(cs) This is study explores the problem of Merton´s Matthew effect on institutional level in Czech higher education. Based on literature review I analyse data on funding and human resources aggregated on institutional level to show the differentiation of research capacity among Czech higher education institutions. For the concentration of research capacity the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index is calculated and compared in time. The results show that there is relatively stable structure of 3-4 main actors and number of less significant research universities in Czech higher education and that this situation is a result of a long-term accumulation of both financial and symbolic resources. This trend is showed also in a short timeframe on the analysis of funding from national science foundation allocated on the basis of traditional academic peer-review process. Finally, I argue that this latent function (in Merton´s terms) should not be further strengthened by policy initiatives for “excellence” in research, because it will only petrify the hegemonic position of “winners” instead of bringing more competition into higher education systems.
