Description
| - Ischemic preconditioning is a technique in which tissue is rendered resistant to the deleterious effects of prolonged ischemia and reperfusion by prior exposure to brief, repeated periods of vascular occlusion [Czech Cardiology Society, Medicine Word]. The hypothesis of ischemic preconditioning was first described at 1986 in [Murray], where it was demonstrated a 75 % reduction in infarct size caused by a 40 min coronary artery occlusion, when the occlusion was preceded by four episodes of 5 min ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion. Cardiac ischemia also causes beat-to-beat fluctuation in action potential duration which leads to T-wave alternans and arrhythmias [Qian]. Other studies describes links between action potenntial prolongation to cardiac alternans [Wilson]. This paper analyse action potentials recorded during repeated global ischemia and reperfusion in the experiment with rabbit hearts and verify the theory of ischemic preconditioning. In the experiment, optical mapping on the myocardium was use
