  • The fracture problem for a brittle matrix reinforced by ductile particles is considered. In the usual manner it is assumed that the crack surface bridging forces provided by the unbroken particles improve the fracture toughness of the matrix. Moreover, a single collinear microcrack on a continuation of the main crack is considered. Such a configuration of the microcrack shows a deleterious effect on fracture toughness. Consequently, it is of interest to study theoretically the interaction between a main, bridged crack and neighbouring microcrack.
