Description
  • The present contribution reviews the approaches used for description of biomass combustion on grate with emphasis on thermo-physical data. The focus is on a dynamic model with one space dimension, which is suitable for the discussion of physical properties and reaction rates. Mathematical model is based on a system of governing partial differential equations describing both solid fuel and gas phase. Fuel properties are the main factors controlling the grate combustion process. The dimensionally simplified approach is ideal for the validation of experimental data and tuning of empirical model parameters. The present review has been conducted as a preparation for a complete three-dimensional grate combustion model development. Thermophysical properties of various biomass fuels are compared and analysed with respect to their importance for the modelled process. Composition of solid biomass fuels and implications for the combustion process are discussed as well.
