| - Loaded materials can fail by rapid fracture at stresses much below their strength level as determined in tests on carefully prepated specimens. To ensure fracture-safe design in the materials , the transition-temperature approach is often used. One of the experimental possibilities determining transition temperature isn the Charpy impact test, when a notched-bar speciamen is loaded in bending by a swinging pendulum and the energy absorbed in the fracturing specimen is measured. Impact energy vs. temperaature curve called transitioncurve is divided into three regions : the region of lower temperatures with brittle fracture and low values of absorbed energy (lower shelf), the transition region, and the region of higher temperatures with ductile fractureand high values of absorbed energy (higher shelf). Often also the lateral expansion of broken bars and percentage of brittle (or ductile) fracture surface is measured.

- Pomocí testů speciálně připravených vzorků bylo zjištěno, že materiály se mohou během zatěžování náhle porušit při napětích nižších než mez pevnosti v důsledku změny teploty. Pro posouzení lomového chování materiálů v závislosti na teplotě, tzv. tranzitního lomového chování se používá zkouška rázem v ohybu, při které dochází k přeražení zkušebního tělíska s vrubem jedním rázem tzv. Charpyho kladiva a měří se absorbovaná energie při porušení vzorku. Křivka závislosti velikosti nárazové práce na teplotě sse nazývá tranzitní křivka a je rozdělena na tři oblasti : oblast nižkých teplot s křechkým lomem a nízkými hodnotami nárazové práce, přechodová oblast a oblast vysokých teplot s vysokými hodnotami nárazové práce a s tvárným lomem (cs)
