Description
  • The airborne particulate matter (PM) is highly heterogeneous and varies greatly in size, composition, and concentration, depending on its sources, location, season, day, and time of day. Road transport contributes significantly to production of PM emissions mainly from fuel combustion but also from mechanical abrasion processes from tyres, brakes, clutches and road surfaces. Fine particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm after inhalation penetrate deeply into lungs. Epidemiological studies over last decade have reported associations between PM exposure and morbidity and mortality, particularly among those people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. The major components of PM are metals, organic compounds, biological material, ions, reactive gases and elemental carbon. Several reports suggest that much of PM toxicity is related to the trace metals content of the particles. However, here are still a few data on the contents of trace metals in fine fraction PM2.5 and PM1.

Epidemiologické studie z posledního desetiletí prokázaly souvislost mezi expozicí PM a mortalitou a morbiditou, zejména u lidí s kardiovaskulárním a respiračními chorobami. Hlavními složkami PM jsou kovy, organické látky, biologický materiál, ionty, reaktivní plyny a elementární uhlík. Několik prací naznačuje, že značná část toxicity PM souvisí s obsahem stopových kovů v částicích. Nicméně existuje stále ještě málo dat týkajících se obsahu stopových kovů v PM2.5 a PM1. (cs)
