Description	The aim of work was to make the material expert examination consisting of a verification of chemical composition, metallographic/fractographic analyses of a centrifugally cast reducing roll made of alloyed ductile cast iron, in order to determine the reason of its fracture. The customer also ordered an appreciation of the occurence of two strips of defects and unevennesses oriented radially on a part of the working face of the roll together with a proposal how to eliminate their occurence with potential production aids. The work serves as an example of the utilization of a very well equipped metallographic laboratory as well as the knowledge of the experienced team of our shop for the solution of material problems in the production practices.
