Description
(cs)
  • The cement industry is responsible for producing about 7% of total global CO2 emissions. In last few years substantial efforts have been made to achieve some enhancements, in this respect, by increasing the production of blended cements using solid industrial by-products (fly ash, condensed silica fume, metallurgical slag, etc.) as well as some natural pozzolanic materials (volcanic tuffs, diatomaceous earth, etc.). These materials exhibit cementitious and/or pozzolanic properties and can be characterized as supplementary cementing materials (SCM). The production of such cements is believed to be a less CO2 intensive one. Considering the degradation of reinforced concrete structures the corrosion of reinforcement is dominant and the carbonation of concrete and the chloride penetration are the main mechanisms that pave the way for an initiation of such corrosion. Therefore, the focus of this paper is the durability of reinforced concretes made from blended cement, concentrating on carbonation progress
