| - Rozvoj společnosti je spojen zejména s endogenními teoriemi rozvoje, kdy hlavní komponentu rozvoje tvoří aktivace interního rozvojového potenciálu. Regiony zde potom hrají zásadní roli tím, že se stávají motorem pro rozvoj společnosti. Regiony, které jsou obvykle definovány jako část jednoho státu nebo jedné ekonomiky, nejsou obvykle oddělené od ostatních oblastí formálními hranicemi a jinými ekonomickými bariérami. Representují tak území s vysokou koncentrací ekonomického života společnosti. Lze tedy říci, že národní ekonomiky se sestávají z růstných regionů. Ekonomický růst celku může být ovlivněn určitým způsobem vývojem těchto regionů. Podle různých regionálně-teoretických koncepcí není možné dosáhnout stabilního rozvoje všech regionů (podle neoklasické teorie). Rychlost rozvoje (případně zaostávání) jednotlivých regionů je rozdílná. Lze říci, že tento jev má vysoký dopad na disparity mezi regiony.
