Description
  • Antimony electrodes belong to the oldest ones in potentiometric acid-base titrations and pH measurements. (known since 1923 when introduced). The first attempt to apply an antimony-based film electrode in anodic stripping voltammetry (2004) was not completely successful because of unsuitable buffer choice. Recently (2007), it has been shown that such electrodes need to be applied in highly acidic solutions of hydrochloric acid (pH { 2). On the contrary to other metal films (Hg, Bi), products of the Sb film reoxidations are insoluble in such media and thus, it can be used in much wider potential window limited by hydrogen evolution on the catodic and chlorine evolution on the anodic sides. In addition to possible application of Sb-based electrodes to determine some heavy metals deposited and reoxidized at negative potentials, this fact allowed to elaborate new procedures for anodic stripping determination of Hg(II), Cu(II), and Bi(III). In these experiments, a catalytic effect of the presence of Cd(II) was observed, probably connected with formation of the intermetalic CdSb alloy. Antimony(III) salts and antimony film electrodes were successfully applied in potentiometric stripping analysis as well. Numerous examples are given.
