Description
  • Several clinical studies have indicated that high plasma homocysteine concentration is an independent risk factor for origin and progress of atherosclerosis. The grade of atherosclerotic changes in coronary arteries may be investigated with coronarography. The aim of study was to compare levels of total plasma homocysteine in two groups of patients with different coronarography findings. There were 50 patients (33 men and 17 women) with positive findings in the first group. The mean value of age was 65.5 ? 13.9. Positive coronarography was characterized as 50% or more stenosis at least in one of the epicardial coronary arteries. There were 46 patients (24 men and 22 women) with negative findings in the second group. The mean value of age was 61.5 ? 13.9. Negative coronarography was characterized as no stenosis at least in one of the epicardial coronary arteries. We have determined concentration of total plasma homocysteine using ion-paired reversed-phase HPLC with coulometric electrochemical detection
