Description
  • A large suite of fresh and metasomatically modified carbonatites from the Lugiin Gol and Omnot Olgii complexes in South Gobi (Mongolia) was examined. These carbonatites have a clear economic potential owing to their overall high content of rare-earth elements (REE). Exploration is currently underway to determine the commercial viability of these deposits. The samples studied in this work were collected from outcrop and drill-core. Representative chondrite-normalized REE profiles of the Lugiin Gol and Omnot Olgii carbonatites have a steep negative slope and lack any anomalies. In addition, all analyzed samples are characterized by extremely high abundances of Ba and Sr, coupled with low levels of Nb, Ta, Ti, K, Rb and Cs.
