Description
  • Persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity are important characteristics of many organic compounds. They are the subjects of long-range atmospheric transport, and deposition in cold ecosystems at high elevations and latitudes, where they can undergo various chemical and photochemical reactions. Fate of persistent organic pollutants in cold regions, especially the possibility of their photochemical reactions in the rigid matrices have been studied in our laboratory for several years now. Techniques for laboratory modeling of environmental photochemistry in the matrix of polycrystalline water ice, on the surface of ice or vegetation, as well as in the layer of natural snow were employed. However, simulation of processes occurring in the natural snow requires the study of evaporation, migration, phase exchange, primary and secondary photochemical transformations, and several other processes. In our current effort we established a new technique for such simulation, and the first results from tho
