Description	Catalina de Erauso, a fascinating character of the 17th century, was both a nun and a soldier. In her memoirs (Historia de la monja alférez), which are still a source of inspiration for many authors, this idiosyncratic figure captures the difficult journey she took to make her dreams come true, when she decided to live as a man. Catalina describes her vicissitudes, when after her escape from a monastery she took a masculine name and got aboard a ship heading across the ocean. In the New World, she enlisted in the Spanish army and fought in several battles as an ordinary soldier. (en) Catalina de Erauso, la enigmática Monja Alférez, quien vivió en la primera mitad del áureo siglo XVII, es sin duda alguna, uno de los personajes más peculiares de la historia espańola. Hasta hoy día sigue suscitando mucha curiosidad y atención no sólo de investigadores e historiadores, sino también, de numerosos escritores. Esta figura singular se hizo famosa ya en la época del Siglo de Oro en la que a le tocó vivir, y a partir de entonces, sus andanzas se convirtieron en una fuente inagotable de inspiración para novelistas y dramaturgos de los tiempos posteriores. A través de los siglos esa curiosidad por las peripecias de la Monja alférez se ha combinado con el afán investigador. Como apunta María Asunción Gómez, cada época hace su propia lectura de la vida de este personaje fascinante, para poder interpretarlo conforme con las ideas dominantes en los períodos correspondientes, algunas veces de maneras muy contradictorias.
