  • The Brno Historical-Philosophical School, which emerged in the 1950s from where there had formerly been the Department of the History of Philosophy and Logic at the Faculty of Arts in Brno and to which Josef Macháček (1917-1984), Jiří Cetl (1925-2000), Karel Hlavoň (1930), Lubomír Nový (1930-1996) and Jiří Gabriel (1930) belonged, was a community of teachers and scholars who shared their convictions about the sense of philosophy, about the character of work concerning its history and about the way philosophy should be taught at universities. The great contribution of the Brno school indisputably resided in the steadfast orientation of the systematic research towards the history of philosophy, especially the history of Czech philosophical thinking of the 19-th and 20-th centuries.
