  • Preventive transplantation of autogenous mesenchymal stem cells into iatrogenically created defect in femoral distal growth plate in rabbit prevented origination of a bone bridge and healed the physeal defect in by hyaline cartilage. Immunofluorescence examination proved that the newly created chondrocytes originated in the growth zone as a result of differentiation of implanted MSCs. Growth of the right femur in the traumatized physis was preserved after transplantation of autogenous MSCs and, compared to the left femur (with physeal defect but without transplanted MSCs), substantial shortening and valgus deformity of the bone did not occur (p=0.018).
