Description
  • If neglecting of modern emancipation matrix in terms of nationalist, feminist, and socialist as well as secularist movements confuses deeper understanding of the (re)presentation of the Orient in modern Europe, Said?s concept of Orientalism deserves a reconsideration. This article aims to provide a stimulus for such a revision while it addresses the (re)presentation of the Orient, and particularly Egypt in modern Czech women magazines. An analysis of the liberal journal Women?s Horizon (1900?1941) and the catholic journal Eve (1904?1925) is based on a comparative review of both Egyptian and Czech emancipation processes and explores five main questions: Who were authors of articles dealing with Orient? What did they mainly depict? What kind of resources did they use? Whose voice(s) did they represent? How did they talk about women emancipation in Oriental countries? Finally, a case of harem pants as a symbol of both the Orient and women emancipation is discussed.
