Description	Pinus timleri KINKELIN in ENGELHARDT & KINKELIN ist ein Pflanzen-Relikt im Obermiozän und Pliozän Europas, dessen rezente Nachfolger heute im Raum der Kanarischen Inseln (P. canariensis C. SM.) und des Himalayas (P. roxburghii SARG.) vertreten sind. Ihre Vorläufer sind im Oligozän und Miozän Europas bekannt. Die großen inkohlten Zapfen gehören zu den markantesten Pflanzenfossilien, die in pliozänen Schichten des Tagebaues Hambach zu finden sind. Zusammen mit der Art Pinus strozzii GAUDIN in GAUDIN & STROZZI , die auf Zapfen- Ausgüssen aus dem Pliozän des zentralen und östlichen Mediterranes gegründet ist, gehört sie zu einem gemeinsamen Arten-Komplex. Dieser ist durch exzentromukronate Umbos und Samen mit verwachsenem Flügel charakterisiert und wird zur Sula Gruppe (früher sect. Sula MAYR oder sect. Pinus subsect. Canarienses LOUDON, heute subsect. Pinaster LOUDON) zu den Diploxylon-Kiefern gestellt. Pinus timleri KINKELIN in ENGELHARDT& KINKELIN is a plant relict, whose descendants in the Canary Islands (P. canariensis C. SM.) and the Himalayas (P. roxburghii SARG.) till now survived. Its ancestors have been known from the Oligocene and Miocene Europas. Its massive seed cones belong to noteworthy plant fossils occurring the Pliocene of the Hambach opencast mine. Together with Pinus strozzii GAUDIN in GAUDIN & STROZZI, based on seed cones from the central and eastern Mediterranean, belongs to the same fossil complex, characterized by excentromucronate umbos of seed cones and seeds with adnate wings, belonging to the Sula group (former sect. Sula MAYR or sect. Pinus subsect. Canarienses LOUDON, recently merged with subsect. Pinaster LOUDON) of the Diploxylon pines (Pinus L. subgen Pinus). (en)
