Description	A short story is a genre full of paradoxes: the human beings have been telling stories since ancient times, nevertheless the short story as a genre is not established till the 19th century; for its shortness it seems simple, but, in fact, it reaches in a limited space an immense narrative tension and it creates an autonomous world. In Hispanoamerica, the epoch called modernism (the turn of the 20th century) brings an enormous bloom of this genre and it represents a decisive step towards the modern literature. The modernist short story offers two basic types: texts about the role of artists and their relationship with the society; and texts of fantastic nature. Both types of stories can be found in the work of Rubén Darío. (en) El cuento es un género lleno de paradojas: los hombre se van contando historias desde tiempos remotos, pero el cuento como género no se ha establecido hasta el siglo XIX; por su dimensión pequeňa parece ser simple, sin embargo, en un espacio reducido alcanza una enorme tensión narrativa y crea un autónomo mundo ficticio. En Hispanoamérica es la época modernista (finales del s.XIX y principios del XX) la que trae un enorme auge del cuento - es entonces cuando el cuento da el paso decisivo hacia la literatura moderna. El cuento modernista ofrece dos tipos básicos: textos sobre el papel del artista en el mundo y su relación con la sociedad; y textos de índole fantástica. La obra cuentística de Rubén Darío es como un breviario del género.
