Description
| - New records of the remains of Cetorhinus parvus (Leriche, 1910) from the Dynów marlstone of the Menilitic formation (Czech Republic) enhance our knowledge about this fossil representative of the basking shark. For a long time only the gill raker elements were known in the Carpathians. Recently Cetorhinus vertebral centra were described by GREGOROVA (2011) from the Moravian locality of Litenčice. New material from the last locality and revised material from the Mouchice and Nítkovice localities contain a section of the gill arches with articulated gill raker elements (Nítkovice), dermal denticles of the skin (Mouchnice, Nítkovice) and isolated teeth (Litenčice). The teeth of fossil Cetorhinus were unknown for a long time until a report by HERMAN (1979), from the Neogene sediments of Belgium. The only record of an Oligocene tooth comes from the Frauenweiler locality (Rhine Valley, Germany) and was described by HOWESTADT and HOVESTADT (2012). During an excavation in 2010, as part of a National Geographic Society grant supported project, new and important material was collected from the Litenčice locality. Three shark genera are identified (Alopias, Squalus and Cetorhinus). While the Alopias and Squalus teeth were already known, the Cetorhinus teeth are recorded for the first time in the Carpathians. The teeth display important variability in their shape and they are quite different from the extant Cetorhinus maximus.
