Description	The aim of the study was to examine a possible augmentation of systemic administration of tranexamic acid by the additional topical application (into the pericardial cavity) during heart valve surgery. One-hundred patients were enrolled in the study. The cummulative blood loss was evidently higher in the placebo group, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. Significantly higher variance of blood loss 24 hours postoperatively was found. The proportion of patients requiring fresh frozen plasma postoperatively was significantly lower in the group with additional topical application of tranexamic acid.
