Description
  • The correlation between Cd, Pb and Hg concentrations in moss samples collected at ca 7000 sites across Europe in 1990-2005 and modelled deposition values as well as selected site-specific and regional characteristics was investigated. The modelled deposition data for Cd, Pb and Hg were obtained from the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP). The correlation analysis showed that cadmium and lead concentrations in moss had been primarily determined by atmospheric deposition of these metals followed by emission amounts of Cd and Pb. In contrast, low correlation was found between Hg concentration in moss and in the atmosphere and atmospheric deposition levels of Hg. The spatial variability in Hg moss concentration pattern was primarily associated with the sampled moss species. More studies of uptake of different chemical species of Hg by moss species are called for.
