Description
  • Dehydrins are fascinating proteins belonging to large LEA (late-embryogenesis abundant) protein family which accumulate not only in maturating seed embryos, but also in various plant vegetative tissues under conditions of cellular dehydration. Since cellular dehydration represents an important aspect of various abiotic stresses such as drought, enhanced salinity, but also a low-temperature stress (chilling and frost), heavy-metal stress or wounding. Recent knowledge on dehydrin accumulation in various plant species with a focus on important crops and dehydrin roles in plant stress response (dehydration-protective, chaperone, cryoprotective, antifreeze, radical-scavenging, metal ion-binding) are summarized. Finally, possibilities of dehydrin utilization as markers of plant stress tolerance are discussed and some examples of transgenic studies aimed at improvement of plant stress tolerance via enhanced dehydrin gene expression are given.
