  • Selection through to molecular markers (MAS) might be an efficient breeding tool special for programmes with strategic importance, where used testing procedures are not effective, costly or difficult. The advantage of molecular markers is also time, when breeder can receive the information about the location of wanted gene in plant or progeny. Czech breeding company Selgen have utilizated markers for the couple of decades. Determination of quality by markers is extensive and estimation of low baking quality is effective. Breeding for BYDV resistance was enhanced by Bdv2 marker. There is no selection advantage in presence of this marker. FHB is widely studied and Sumai3 based markers are used but further study is required. And also small and medium size companies need broad cooperation with universities and public research to develop and utilize new markers.

  • . Resistance of 31 winter wheat varieties (registered varieties and the check variety Arina) to Fusarium head blight was studied in field infection trials lasting 3 years (2007-2009). In spring barley similar experiments lasted two years (2008-2009) and included 46 materials (the commonly grown varieties and the selected resistance sources). The spraying of spore suspension of Fusarium culmorum was applied onto bunches of selected 10 spikes at flowering stage (GS 64; anthesis half-way). In winter wheat the lowest accumulation of mycotoxin DON in grain was detected in the variety Bakfis, which could be in each year included in the homogenous group showing the highest resistance. Every year this group also contained the varieties Arina, Federer, Baletka, Samanta, Sakura, Dromos, Kušútka, Sultan and Hedvika. DON content of spring barley was even more than in wheat affected by year (2008 – 15.0 mg/kg a 2009 – 56.0 mg/kg).
