| - Landraces and obsolete cultivars (120 accessions) were evaluated in three-year field trials. Among the 13 examined characters, a relatively wide diversity (C.V. over 10%) has been estimated in spike length, characters of spike productivity (except in grain weight) and some quality characters (SDS-test and especially Gluten Index). Lower spike productivity and good grain quality were characteristic for cultivars originating in the southeast whereas cultivars from northwest Europe showed an opposite tendency and were late. Most of landraces and obsolete cultivars from North-East and North Europe proved also good winterhardiness. Valuable resources can be found in grain quality characters. Productivity of selected 31 accessions was estimated in field trials in 6 environments. Mean yield of four modern cultivars was by 51% higher then in landraces and obsolete cultivars. Eleven old cultivars provided mean yields over 4 t per ha, 4 local cultivars belonged to this group. Impact of environmental factors w
