Description
| - Tetraploid ecotypes originating from Atlantic coastal region in comparison to diploids are large growing stature, they build looser tuf, fewer vegetative offshoots. Their leaves are coarser, culms are thicker, less foliated, the Thousand-seed-weight is higher. They are earlier, more productive, the forage quality is good. Among diploid subspecies, ssp. aschersoniana is best adapted to the climatic conditions of Central Europe and meets the requirements of herbage production. Ssp. galiciana is also a high yielding grass, possessing higher resistance to rust, mildew, and good resistance to fusaria. Ssp. lusitanica has smoother leaves, but it is less yielding, proportion of leaves in the herbage is lower and it shows a lower winter hardiness. It seems to be of little interest as a genetic resource for forage grass breeding in this country.
