Description	On the territory of the Czech Republic (CR), fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora, was first observed in 1986 (Kůdela 1988). Sixteen years later, in 2002, the disease is occurring in one-half of apple an pear production area in the CR. The control measures, used up to now in fire blight contaminated area, are not always satisfactory and are limited to removal of diseased plants or their parts, cultural practices or, as an exception, the application of chemical sprays. The growing of more resistant tree scion varieties on more resistant rootstocks is probably the most efficient control of fire blight. In general, pear varieties are more susceptible to fire blight than apple varieties.
