| - European winter wheat landraces and obsolete cultivars (120 accessions) from 15 European countries were evaluated in three-year field trials in Prague-Ruzyně. As cultivars from the most of European regions are involved and a broad spectrum of characters was evaluated, the paper presents some original data on diversity in European wheat. Among the 13 examined characters, a relatively wide diversity (C.V. over 10%) has been estimated in spike length, characters of spike productivity (except in grain weight) and some quality characters (SDS-test and especially Gluten Index, where the highest variability was found). Although it was difficult to distinguish the cultivars according to the country of origin, lower spike productivity and good gram quality were charactenstic for those originating in the southeast whereas cultivars from northwest Europe showed an opposite tendency and were late. Using cluster analyses eight groups of cultivars were identified, oné of them was represented by the check cultivars
