Description
  • Method for extraction of calcified or pyritised fossils from calcareous rocks has been developed. It is based on the differential speeds for dissolution of macrocrystalline and microcrystalline calcite in 38% sulphuric acid. Method consists of the following steps: preparation of specimen for extraction (involving drying the fossil and surrounding rock), submerging the dry specimen in a bath of 38% sulphuric acid (covered by a lid), leaving the specimen in the bath for a period of 1 minute to 2 hours, removal of the specimen from the bath and washing it under a stream of tepid water, submerging the specimen in a neutralising bath for a period of 2-6 hours, removal and cleaning of the specimen, drying of the specimen. Disregarding the scientific value of these macrofossils (important for palaeontology, palaeoecology, biostratigraphy, palaeobiogeography and sedimentology) also commercial-industrial uses have been described.
