Description
| - The paper deals with the new approach to basin subdivision, provenance of detrital material, and thermal history. The composition of detrital minerals, such as garnets, provides evidence on the diversity of provenance of the sand bodies and units within the original subbasins. The westernmost Andělská hora formation of the Nízký Jeseník (Světlá Greywacke Member) does not have a counterpart in the Drahany Upland. The “western Culm basin” comprises from S to N the Protivanov and Horní Benešov Fms. with typical polymictic assemblage of translucent heavy minerals and detrital garnets. The eastern Culm basin is subdivided to the lower and upper suite with pyrop-almandine garnets dominating in the latter. The most substantial change within the garnet detritus reflects sudden influx of HT and HP metamorphites into upper suite of the eastern subbasin. The missing Upper Paleozoic units eroded from the original basin and from the later deformed edifice of the Variscan thrust and fold belt were restored using vitrinite reflectance. The regional trends show a systematic decrease in the maturity from present W to E, i.e. from the disturbed orogenic belt to the Variscan marginal foreland basin, where only limited deformation is observed. Basin modelling provides evidence on palaeo-heat flow of 60-80 mW.m-2, which is much less than the values estimated in the earlier studies. The maximum pre-thrusting burial was according to the models of 6-9 km (or more) in the West and 1.5-2 km in the East. In general, the amount of erosion increased also from S to N, but this trend is not as pronounced as that from W to E. The conclusion is that the preserved Culm rocks in the western Drahany and N. Jeseník Mts. represent the basal part of a broader and much thicker basin. The eroded rocks were transported to the newly opened ocean mainly during the Late Palaeozoic, Cretaceous, and Palaeogene.
