Description
| - The purpose of hydrogeological research into the far field of interactions is to obtain knowledge of the flow of groundwater in the rock medium near the repository and between the repository and the Earth’s surface. Groundwater is the transport medium for the spreading of contamination, if any, from the repository into the biosphere. It is necessary to identify the paths and velocity of flow to be able to judge the part played by the rock environment as a natural barrier. The knowledge of hydrogeological parameters is necessary for creating mathematical models of groundwater flow and for their subsequent calibration and verification. Hydrogeological field research produces information about the spatial orientation of hydraulically significant fractures and fracture zones and about the hydraulic properties of rocks, including hydraulic conductivity and porosity. Hydrogeological research also determines the piezometric levels of the separate fracture systems and hydraulic gradients, which are the principal driving force of groundwater flow. It also takes into account hydrological and meteorological data such as the properties of the surface water net and the time series of atmospheric precipitation, evapotranspiration and surface runoff.
