Description
  • Cordaitaleans are abundantly represented in the dispersed cuticular assemblages obtained from Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian and Lower Permian coal seams. Cordaitalean cuticles are easy to distinguish having stomatal complexes mostly with two polar and two lateral subsidiary cells. The stomata of the abaxial cuticle usually form stomatal rows or stomatiferous bands. In many cases, it is difficult to correlate dispersed cuticles with “in situ” cordaitalean cuticles, Šimůnek and Florjan (2013) erected two cuticular genera: Cordaadaxicutis Šimůnek et Florjan – for adaxial cuticles and Cordaabaxicutis Šimůnek et Florjan – for abaxial cuticles. Nine species of Cordaadaxicutis and nine species of Cordaabaxicutis were described from the Westphalian of the Upper Silesian Basin. New research has revealed the presence of the same species in the stratigraphically equivalent strata in the Intrasudetic Basin, e.g. Cordaadaxicutis bracteatus, C. laziskae and C. krajewskae, and Cordaabaxicutis jaworznoensis, C. brzyskii, C. borassifolioides and C. papilloborassifolius. The dispersed cuticles from the Intrasudetic Basin are also correlated with some “in situ” cuticles of Cordaites schatzlarensis Šimůnek et Libertín and C. odolovensis Šimůnek. Other cuticles are comparable with species described in the 20th century: Cordaites sp. Types 2, 3, and 4 of Barthel (1962a,b) and Cordaites neimengensis Liu et al., 1998, but these species are stratigraphically younger (Asturian and early Permian) than cuticles from the Intrasudetic Basin (Langsettian and Duckmantian). Several new cordaitalean cuticular species, that will be subject of future research, were discovered in the Czech part of the Intrasudetic Basin.
