Description
  • Landscape evolution at Machu Picchu is complex. Destructive geomorphologic processes have often followed predispositions by tectonic structure. Besides slope movements, also river erosion and selective mass wasting by weathering and superficial and uderground erosion has been active, there. Large-scale slope movements have seriousy affected mountain morphology. Yet, their present-day activity remains uncertain, in spite, that monitoring time series have shown irreversible movements of the order of 0,1 mm/year at several sites of the archaeological area. Underground erosion by suffosion along tectonically and by the large-scale landslides shattered zones, and uneven settlements of heavy stone buildings on water more saturated grounds are the other potential explanations to those movements. In any case, the occurrence of a large-scale catastrophically rapid slope movement event is improbable within the short time interval of several years, if the present day conditions are maintained.

(cs)
