Description
  • Intracerebroventricular administration of N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate (NAAG) and quinolinic acid (QUIN) significantly increased the permeability of blood brain barrier (BBB) to serum albumin. While NAAG was only effective in the striatum, QUIN also increased the entry of serum albumin into the hippocampus, in addition to the striatum. NMDA receptor antagonist, MK-801 blocked the action of QUIN but not that of NAAG. Neither L-glutamate (L-GLU) nor N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA), potential products of thehydrolysis of NAAG, had any effect on the passage of albumin across the BBB. Thus NAAG can change the permeability of the BBB but the changes coincide neither in location nor in pharmacology with the NAAG-induced neurodegeneration in the hippocampus.
