Description
  • Early medieval silver hoards consisting of coins, their fragments and jewelry fragments represent an important and irreplaceable primary source in process of understanding political and economic history of the countries where they had been discovered or the territories relevant from the trading and strategic point of view, as well as the areas connected with origin of the coins or jewels (West Europe, Islamic East). The Kelč hoard (central Moravia) plays a leading role among the mixed hoards of the 10th and 11th century in the territory of the Czech Lands. Based on contemporary reports, selected publications of the material and the following recent reconstruction, the hoard used to consist of 275 complete European silver coins and 607 of their fragments, 1,222 fragments of Islamic silver coins and one complete silver dirham, plus 307 fragments of silver jewels. The hoard is dated back to the first decade of the 11th century. Among fragments of coins of other Islamic dynasties (Umayyads, Abbasids, Samanids, Saffarids, Volga Bulghars), there were Buyid and Hamdanid fragments registered in the hoard. Some of them have been made of extremely rare and unpublished coins.
