Description
  • This article focuses on Bohemian-born naturalist Tadeo Haenke (1761-1816) and his American ethnographic collection in Prague. In 1790, Haenke joined Malaspina´s voyage that had sailed from Cadiz in 1789, explored mainly the American West Coast, continued towards the Pacific Ocean, and concluded in Spain in 1794. Haenke collected his artifacts in 1791 during three exploratory stays of the expedition: on June and July at the Alaskan Yakutat Bay among the Tlingit , on August on the Vancouver among the Nootka , and on September in California where he acquired Chumash baskets probably at the mission. Prior to 1794 he sent to the firm Hiecke, Zienke et Co. to Cadiz, Spain a sum of 15,000 plants and several ethnographic items for safekeeping. After Haenke´s death the firm sent the entire set to Hamburg. In 1821, the Patriotic (today´s National) Museum in Prague purchased this collection and lately it was transferred into Náprstek Museum. A catalog of the items is included in this article.

(cs)
