Description
| - Feeding preference and growth of 0+ perch were studied in ponds with and without topmouth gudgeon. At the end of April, all ponds were stocked by free swimming perch larvae. In June, topmouth gudgeon was introduced as forage fish into two of ponds. The most important food item of perch (SL > 24 mm) were chironomids which composed 50 and 27% of perch food. In ponds with prey fish, copepods and cladocerans were more important than in pond without it. Other food components, insect water larvae were ingested occasionally. Only several individuals of perch fed on its siblings and/or prey fish. Specific growth rate was 0.01 mm day-1 in all ponds. Final total length (TL ± SD) of perch was 73 ± 13 mm and 70 ± 6 mm in the ponds with topmouth gudgeon and without it. Only 1 % of the perch reached higher TL than that recorded in the ponds without the topmouth gudgeon. Presence of littoral macrophytes emerged to be more substantial for rearing perch in ponds than stocking with the prey fish.
