Description	Springs are typical isolated biotopes, which are due to their relatively stable conditions important as a refugia for many organisms in case of extreme climatological conditions. In 89 springs of Balnice River catchment (Šumava Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic) altogether 16 000 macrozoobenthic individuals were identified, belonging to eleven taxonomical groups. The most numerous groups were Plecoptera, Pisidium sp., Chironomidae, Gammarus sp. and Trichoptera. We suppose that the biodiversity of freshwater assemblages significantly depends on the supply of detritus from headwaters, mainly from springs.
