Description	After the accident of the reactor at Tshernobyl, information has been presented in mass media, especially caesium 137, in mushrooms, wild animals or in other foodstuffs. The acticle throws light on the reasons why these assertions are unfounded. In termsof surface water contamination and the risk of reception of radionuclides by drinking water, it has been shown that the risk of receiving artificial radionuclides as exemplified by caesium 137 is, in consequence of solid links in the environment, signi f icantly lower than the risk of receiving natural radionuclides, such as radon 222, radium 226, radium 228, radioisotopes of uranium, and others. The establishment of relatively low values of the effluent (balance) of the caesium 137 activity through the closing profiles of the Rivers Labe, Morava and Odra, confirms that the decrease in contamination of our territory by caesium 137 is due mainly to its radioactive decay with a half-life of 30,2 years.
