  • Beechnuts from eight Fagus sylvatica lots, stored for 6 months at 8% moisture content, were subjected to accelerated ageing treatments for 0, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 144 hours at 90% RH and at either 37 or 40°C.The viability and germination of the accelerated-aged beechnuts was compared with control beechnuts (fresh, non-dried) which were (after processing and drying to 8% moisture content) stored at –5°C in sealed bags for 0, 6, 14, 20 and 31 months. Based on the viability of the fresh, non-dried beechnuts the seedlots could be separated into two groups (high and low viability), while germination tests showed further differences among the seedlots within those two groups.Viability and germination of beechnuts subjected to accelerated ageing did not reveal deterioration in individual stored beechnut lots. Only in a few seedlots significant relationships were detected between conductivity and viability and conductivity and germination.
