  • Important precondition for future parameters of the high quality oak stands is proper tending at young age, at the phase of thicket. The study is focused on the effect of two different thinning regimes (2 – high thinning and 3 – low thinning) on the development of oak thicket with special attention paid to target trees, all compared with control (1) without treatment. The study started in 1994 in 11 years old stand originated from natural regeneration with density over 17,000 trees per hectare. In total 5% of N (8% G) was removed by high thinning on plot 2 and 36% of N (16% G) by low thinning on variant 3 in 1994. Second high thinning (8% N, 7% G) was conducted only on plot 2 at the age of 15 years (1998). At the age of 24 years we found positive effect of high thinning on vitality of smaller trees, while diameter of target trees was higher on both thinned variants compared to control but significantly only on plot with low thinning.
