Description
  • Simulation of material properties of composite materials reinforced with long fibres using the finite element method allows faster and more efficient computation and design times in the development of new composite structures. Firstly, it allows the partial replacement of expensive and time-consuming material tests, and secondly, it is possible to use this approach to acquire theoretical values of material properties lying outside the reinforcement plane. This article presents the simulation results of a laminate with an orthogonal plain weave of reinforcement using the finite element method. Theoretical data were acquired for glass and carbon reinforcement, and (for both of these types of reinforcement) the courses of moduli E1, E2, E3, G23, G31, and G12 were determined, depending on the volume fraction of the reinforcement. Specifically, calculations were made for nine values of reinforcement volume fractions in the range of 27-55%. The theoretical courses of the moduli were compared with the results of material tests. Coefficients lying in the reinforcement plane were compared with the results of standard tensile tests, while coefficients lying outside the reinforcement plane were compared with the results of ultrasonic measurements of suitably designed composite samples.
